Who Were the Olmec?
The Olmec were the first great civilization of the Americas, flourishing along Mexico's Gulf Coast from roughly 1200 to 400 BCE. Often called the "mother culture" of Mesoamerica, they laid the foundation that later civilizations like the Maya and Aztec built upon, pioneering monumental art, early writing, city planning, and the ballgame that spread across the region.
They are best known for their colossal stone heads: massive portraits carved from single blocks of basalt, some standing over nine feet tall and weighing more than 20 tons, transported for miles without wheels or metal tools. Each head is a testament to vision, engineering, and collective will.
